HIV/AIDS Awareness Panel Chat log

Bevan Whitfield: This panel is to dicuss HIV awareness in SL.

CJ27 Jigsaw: Panel is to talk about how they got started in SL with HIV/AIDS education

Bevan Whitfield: Jenaia is now going to speak.

Ellehcim Fizzle: I'm with AIDS.gov. My sound is not working so I'll have to type. Apologies.

Daisyblue Hefferman: everyone please check to see that your talk button is turned off. there is feedback from someone

Bevan Whitfield: 7 months doing this

Bevan Whitfield: people come for the community and support

Smash Lane: only Jenaia has mic on

Bevan Whitfield: dance, song, building used to reach out to the community
Storytelling quest planned in June.

Ricken Flow: go ahead elle introduce yourself

Jenaia Morane: This is the poster for the next healing Quest at Karuna

Ellehcim Fizzle: Hello. I'm Elle Fizzle, aka Michelle Samplin-Salgado . I'm the new media strategist for AIDS.gov

Jenaia Morane: Please touch it for info
We'd love to have you there
And yes the poster is copiable
So go ahead and take one

Ellehcim Fizzle: AIDS.gov is an online portal for all Federal HIV information.
We also incorporate new media into all that we do.

Jenaia Morane: you can buy it for $0

Suza Falta: hi Robin

Ellehcim Fizzle: Including Second Life, which we first started working with around World AIDS Day and are now working with Jenaia around HIV Testing Day.
Thanks Gwen for posting the URL.
We also have a blog, http://blog.AIDS.gov
June 27

CJ27 Jigsaw: AIDS.Gove includes twitter, Facebook and SL to use all social media opps to get out information
Within SL people freerer to speak than in RL as they can hide behind avatar

Ellehcim Fizzle: yes we do, and the focus of our blog is to provide resources and support for AIDS Service Organizations interested in using new media, including SL, in response to HIV
I totally agree.

Bevan Whitfield: which day?

CJ27 Jigsaw: June 27

Bevan Whitfield: ty

Ellehcim Fizzle: So, with respect to HIV Testing Day (JUne 27) we have several activities planned.
We'll be blogging throughout the month of June, highlighting different HIV Testing Story Campaigns.
Like Southern AIDS Quilt and the Poitive Project, to name a few.

CJ27 Jigsaw: StoryQuest, video once a week showing their quest throughout June

Ellehcim Fizzle: And SL Quest :)
we are going to have videos from these campaigns on our website, blog, and in a widget that we're developing together with the CDC

CJ27 Jigsaw: At end of SL Quest will display award winners

Ellehcim Fizzle: yes, i know, it's fantastic. we're a little late to the party but excited to be here.

CJ27 Jigsaw: Collect, share and preserve stories by those with HIV/AIDs

Ellehcim Fizzle: and we plan on promoting and sharing those stories in RL

Jenaia Morane: yes Elle!

Ellehcim Fizzle: On our blog, website, widget, as well as through our federal and community partners, like the National Association for People with AIDS.
We work closely with POZ magazine and they will also be creating stories/videos.

Jenaia Morane: We will expanding the Karuan web site as well

Ellehcim Fizzle: We all plan to cross promote each other. The widget is goign to be key.

CJ27 Jigsaw: Any questions, IM Ricken Flow and he will get to panelists

Jenaia Morane: If anyone here would like more information about collaborating with us
Just let me know

CJ27 Jigsaw: Again, the widget is going to be key

Glitteractica Cookie: so, if you have questions please feel free to tag them #npsl in twitter

Glitteractica Cookie: we are also following that backchannel

Jenaia Morane: If I can do a little plug for the Healing Quests
They will be ongoing at Karuna
The first is centered around HIV/AIDS testing for the month of June
But there will be a whole series
of Healing Quests

Bevan Whitfield: I am using the #npslexpo tag

Jenaia Morane: right

Bevan Whitfield: as was instructed

Ellehcim Fizzle: We're very excited to be partnering with Karuna around the Testing Day Quest

Jenaia Morane: The results will be displayed on Karuna and published on our web site, blogs, and hopefully other pubs inworld and RL

Ellehcim Fizzle: yes, we'll be able to promote it in RL through our Federal and Community partners

CJ27 Jigsaw: One of great advantages to being in SL, can promote in RL and SL too

Ellehcim Fizzle: Absolutely.

CJ27 Jigsaw: Can get a lot of testing education here as well, talking about it on HIV testing Day
Support group meets in SL monthly with HIV/AIDs issues
All the complications that then can be collaborated with the orgs in SL who work with HIV patients
Any simulation in SL of what it's like to live with HIV/AIDs?

Ellehcim Fizzle: Not that I know of. What I'd really like to also do is create a simulation of getting an HIV test in SL...Rapid Oral would be interesting to simulate

CJ27 Jigsaw: Yes, was one, not sure if still available. But CDC had video showing keloids (?) on face
Information to be made available of what happens when have HIV/AIDs as wll as support groups via Karuna
Hoping to eventually expand on this

Ellehcim Fizzle: And prevention information, as well as what kind of support the government can provide for people living with HIV in the US
exactly, gwen.

CJ27 Jigsaw: Hope to collaborate - anyone interested pls contact Jenaia of Karuna

Ellehcim Fizzle: it's very true.

Jenaia Morane: Nods to In Kenzo

CJ27 Jigsaw: 2005 Ricken showed documentary of people in Thailand of people living with HIV/AIDs
One of great concepts in SL is the global aspects
People feel more comfortable in a SL - Ricken spent hours in a cafe talking to international folks about HIV/AIDs
in a SL cafe

Ellehcim Fizzle: Ricken?

CJ27 Jigsaw: Reminder, if you have any questions, pls IM Ricken Flow and he will ask pannelists

Ellehcim Fizzle: that's awful.

CJ27 Jigsaw: Ricken - since he shows HIV/AIDs in profile, has gotten "griefed" in SL and received very silly questions
lack of understanding and awareness of HIV/AIDs

Jenaia Morane: I'd like to ask a question of the audience

JoJa Dhara: /cry.... what is left of the vision of mr Philip Garden..free..creative no predictions

CJ27 Jigsaw: One of reasons why at this Health sim/expo - to show the RL people behind the avatars

JoJa Dhara: amazing that it happens

Jenaia Morane: When you think of HIV/AIDS in second life what is your impression?
would you visit a sim devoted to that?
And if you were going to visit a sim like Karuna

CJ27 Jigsaw: Qtn asked to audience, when you think of HIV/AIDs in SL, what is your impression?

Jenaia Morane: what would you want to see or experience?

Zinnia Zauber: It is a chance to learn more and meet people.

CJ27 Jigsaw: What is your impression of SL HIV/AIDs community?
What would you like to see in SL to education, engage and celebrate life with HIV/AIDs in SL?

Ellehcim Fizzle: I love that.

CJ27 Jigsaw: If members of audience part of HIV/AIDs community - what would you like to see in SL, to bring you to Karuna to help you enjoy SL
Create a fill to the social gap that often happens in RL

LoCE99Ch8 Morpork: Possible RPG so non-members could experience HIV/AIDs

CJ27 Jigsaw: Relationships in SL are often very real and that's important to stress to folks who don't realize that

Glitteractica Cookie: Yes! It's not SL versus RL it's virtual space versus physical space!

JoJa Dhara: question are there any localized communities? as we have so many gateways and countries ? (excuse my un wareness) but has it been thought to go to localized sims with info etc and awareness?

CJ27 Jigsaw: Are there any localized sims with info, and awareness of HIV/AIDs?
Local sim is for Chicago ILL thru Univ of Ill has sim

JoJa Dhara: nice challange then ;-)

CJ27 Jigsaw: Some sims come and go through SL about HIV/AIDs but that Chicago one is the only one Ricken knows that is a local one

Ellehcim Fizzle: AIDS.gov is local for the US

Ricken Flow: their island is BASUAH

Glitteractica Cookie: hey all inworld, look on the screen... it's us!

CJ27 Jigsaw: Chicago Sim is focused on African American community in SL with HIV/AIDs
What do you mean by localized sims?

JoJa Dhara: from different countries yes;;-)

Glitteractica Cookie: the one claiming a cure for AIDS?

CJ27 Jigsaw: asks Jenaia
One of goals at Karuna is to provide info that is not only global but local

JoJa Dhara: maybe global is indeed a better word ;-)

Glitteractica Cookie: We got a very weird and random twitter question/comment for panelists:
brettdusek: Patent No. 5676977 - A CURE FOR AIDS. The general public does NOT know! You can help: http://is.gd/ELqQ (expand). Please RT! #npslexpo
clearly, I do not agree, but those of u that want to respond.. pleae do

CJ27 Jigsaw: Find it in resource center at Karuna as they expand resources
Ricken - lots of misinformation about HIV/AIDs and Karuna works to dispell such misinformation
Also work with FasterCures to do same

Bevan Whitfield: I am doing the #npslexpo
good question
and share and find hope

CJ27 Jigsaw: All kinds of reality - SL provides another avenue of information that may reach people who didn't get it in RL
Makes SL so compelling as a result

Glitteractica Cookie: and with events like mixed relaity, such as this one, it adds an extra lvl of texture

Bevan Whitfield: do we have that live stream on the web?

CJ27 Jigsaw: SL could be aplace to save a life - encourage those afraid to get tests in RL they can come into SL and find info anonmously

Bevan Whitfield: support

CJ27 Jigsaw: Get directed to places in their local region that they can to to "safely" to get tested
that they might not have heard about otherwise

Lotta FLux: The National Council on Family Relations has just published an journal article on "Consequential Strangers and Peripheral Ties: The Importance of Unimportant Relationships"

Ellehcim Fizzle: dwen, that was very nicely said

CJ27 Jigsaw: Journal of Internet MEdical Research published an article about relationships to personal growth

Bevan Whitfield: so no web link to live event?

Jenaia Morane: http://www.jmir.org/2009/2/e17

Lotta FLux: The NCFR journal article is authored by Professor Karen Fingerman, Purdue University. It discusses the importance of social ties to individual well-being.

Bevan Whitfield: excellent article

CJ27 Jigsaw: Qtn asked - how can we as avatars be better caregivers?

Ellehcim Fizzle: in SL or RL (or both?)

CJ27 Jigsaw: Example from Jenaia of givers spend so much time to person, that SL provides social life
Devasting if people give up RL for SL
Jenaia says, SL is support and person with disability can have a whole new life
that they may not have in RL
RL and SL - one not more real than the other

Ellehcim Fizzle: and social connections contribute to our overall health.

CJ27 Jigsaw: more of a crossroads where lives meet
do things in SL that are not just different than RL but even better in SL and may teach us something more

CJ27 Jigsaw: Any last questions for panel - have 5 more minutes?
Pls share any thoughts or ideas - stop by Karuna any day

Bevan Whitfield: please send slurl for Karuna

Ellehcim Fizzle: Yes, and we'll have even more as we gear up for National HIV Testing Day.

Bevan Whitfield: nods

CJ27 Jigsaw: SL is part of real life, another venue we have to educate and provide support to people with HIV/AIDs and other disabliity

CJ27 Jigsaw: Games for health conference link Jenaia

Jenaia Morane: http://www.gamesforhealth.org/archives/000250.html

Ellehcim Fizzle: And if you have any comments or anything we can do to help, please dont' hesitate to contact me at msamplin@jsi.com

CJ27 Jigsaw: Need more volunteers for games for health, contact Jenaia Morane of Karuna

Bevan Whitfield: I can ping to 3000 people.
grins
and then use my SL groups

Glitteractica Cookie: If you are all live tweeting and blogging, please use tag npsl and hashtag #npsl

Jenaia Morane: Please contact me at jenaia@tvwsp.com
